Tu BiShvat (Hebrew: ט״ו בשבט‎) is a minor Jewish holiday occurring on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, also called “The New Year of the Trees” (Hebrew: ראש השנה לאילנות, Rosh HaShanah La’Ilanot). It is one of four “New Years” mentioned in the Mishnah. Historically, the date served as a halakhic boundary marker to distinguish one year’s fruit from another for the purpose of calculating tithes and other agricultural commandments. In modern Israel, the holiday is also celebrated with tree-planting and environmental awareness initiatives.
