According to tradition, the name recalls the first such Shabbat in Egypt, when the Israelites received the commandment to set aside a lamb for the Passover sacrifice. There is a special Haftarah reading on this Shabbat from the book of Malachi. Traditionally, a lengthy sermon is given to the community in the afternoon.
