Shabbat HaGadol (“Great Shabbat” שבת הגדול) is the Shabbat immediately before Passover. According to tradition, the name recalls the first such Shabbat in Egypt, when the Israelites received the commandment to set aside a lamb for the Passover sacrifice. There is a special Haftarah reading on this Shabbat from the book of Malachi. Traditionally, a lengthy sermon is given to the community in the afternoon.
