The name derives from the Hebrew letters lamed (ל, value 30) and gimel (ג, value 3), together equaling 33. According to rabbinic tradition, the holiday marks the end of a devastating plague among Rabbi Akiva’s 24,000 students. It is also commemorated as the death anniversary of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, and modern Jewish tradition links the holiday to the Bar Kokhba revolt against the Roman Empire (132–135 CE).
