The date marks the anniversary of Ben-Gurion’s death. The holiday was established by the Knesset through the Ben-Gurion Law, which mandates memorial services in Israeli institutions, IDF bases, and schools. If the sixth of Kislev falls on Shabbat eve or on Shabbat, the memorial day is held on the following Sunday.
